Roots to the Sky at Amma Farm. Journal Entry #4 by Willi Paul. Urban Permaculture Institute Summer 2011 class.
Amma says, "The beauty and charm of selfless love and service should not die away from the face of the earth. The world should know that a life of dedication is possible, that a life inspired by love and service to humanity is possible.
Permaculture is so much more than dams, ridge points and compost - is also holds a powerful magic Nature – Human partnership and a regime for spiritual insights and building a new sacred way. Consider yesterdays work trek at Amma’s Farm in Castro Valley, CA.
Kevin Bayuk and David Cody’s Urban Permaculture Institute Summer 2011 class laid-out contours for a future orchard with a tool called an A – Frame (see photos), a simple measuring device that keeps the points across the land at the same level, producing a contour for future swale and berm building to come.
As we laughed, and measured, and dripped sweat in the afternoon heat, we did eco-alchemy – transmuting small marker flags from a box into the ground for future water courses. The contours became symbols for future fruit trees and the harvest to be shared with the Amma farm crew and her neighbors.
This is the start of the Permaculture Age, an age of working with the land and her secrets, potentials, alchemies and love.
As in Campbell’s mythology, students and teachers came together to initiate each other in the science and spirit of community alchemy called Permaculture.
Roots to the sky. Will you write the next myth with me?
“Amma says that …Spirituality is the practical science of life. Apart from taking us to the ultimate goal of Self-realization it also teaches us the nature of the world, and how to understand life and live fully in the best way possible."
